Avoiding Spiritual Delusion!

James 1:22-25; Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror, then goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law gives freedom, and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it, they will be blessed in what they do.”
Romans 2:13 reminds us, “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” This echoes James’s message that hearing alone is not enough—obedience demonstrates genuine faith.
It’s a delusion to think you can hear God’s Word, then disobey it without cost!
Matthew 7:21-23 records the tragic results of spiritual delusion. Jesus Christ says, “Not everyone who says to Me, LORD, LORD’ will enter the kingdom of heaven. But he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘LORD, LORD, did we not prophesy in Your Name, and in Your Name cast our demons, and in Your Name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”
Ezekiel 33:31-32 illustrates this principle: “My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.” This passage warns against the danger of passive listening without action. Jesus Christ made a clear distinction between those who merely claim to be Christians and those who truly are. The difference is that true believers do the will of the Father. In the words of James, they are doers of the Word, not merely hearers who delude themselves.
The word “Hearers” in James 1:22 refers to a Greek word meaning “auditing a class.” Auditing students attend class, listen to the instructor, but don’t do any work. Consequently, they don’t receive credit for the course. The phrase “delude themselves” suggests being victimized by one’s own faulty reasoning.
John 14:23-24 records Jesus saying, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching.” This underlines that true love for Christ is proven by obedience to His word. People who listen to God’s Word but never obey it are spiritual auditors who delude themselves by thinking that hearing the Word is all God requires of them. Unfortunately, many churches are full of such people. They attend services and hear the sermons, but their lives never seem to change. They are content to hear the Word but never apply it. Like those whom Jesus condemned in Matthew 7, they have chosen religious activities over true faith in Christ.
James 2:17 states, “Faith by itself, if it does not have work, is dead.” This reinforces the necessity of putting faith into practice through action, not just words or intentions. How tragic to think you’re saved, only to hear, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness” (Matt. 7:23). That will never happen if you are a doer of the Word. Brothers and sisters, take advantage of every opportunity to respond to the Word of God in specific ways. Ask God for His grace to keep you faithful to that goal, by His Grace.
